Puzzled Over What To Look For In A DJ For Your Reception?

A question that is asked all the time, is this: How do you know what makes a good DJ, and how do you know if a DJ will be appropriate for what you want at your reception?

So what makes a good DJ? Someone who listens. It’s important that you can communicate just what you’re after, and then in turn have them bounce their own experience and ideas off you. This will achieve better understanding of just what is needed.

Music taste, surprisingly, matters little. Every DJ has the capacity to play the same music, and DJs know to put aside personal preferences in a goal to satisfy the client. At the end of the day, a DJ is happy to play good music.

Another point that is important to understand is to have the opportunity to discuss what your needs are over the phone or in person. Too many companies fail to provide this basic service, completely ignoring it, or having another representative pass along the information.

At Perfect Entertainment, contact with your DJ forms the groundwork for our service and we look forward to it one day being standard within the industry as demands to provide professional services are met.

Other than that, you need to feel comfortable. Every DJ (at Perfect Entertainment at least) has a checklist that they work off to ensure they’re organised and prepared for your event.

Some more general advice for when you hire a DJ:

The best advice is to firstly know what you want, yet be open to advice. Many clients come to us and say things like ‘oh we love rock’, or ‘pop’, or horror of horrors: ‘whatever’.

And while we wouldn’t recommend selecting enough music for the entire reception, it can be an idea to pick a dozen songs that you would consider music you would want to dance to – this provides a good basis for any DJ to work off and peg what kind of music you enjoy and your friends and family would enjoy.

And remember, when you say ‘rock’ to someone, this can mean a myriad of different things – Rock to someone might be categorised as Elvis or The Beatles, and to another person as Jet, The Foo Fighters, or Grinspoon, and to yet another person as ACDC, Bryan Adams, or The Choirboys…

It’s important to identify just what kind of style of music you like and bounce the songs back and forth with your DJ.
